APARTMENT BUILDING AT KRASNYE VOROTA (RED GATE)
Architects: Alexei Dushkin and Boris Mezentsev
1947 – 1953
The “Red Gate” was a triumphal arch constructed by Tsar Peter the Great to commemorate the Russian victory at the Battle of Poltava, but was destroyed in 1927 to make way for public transit lines. The center building was constructed to hold government agencies, but held administrative and trade union organizations, corporations, and a bank and the side buildings housed 276 apartments. A unique feature of the Apartment Building at Krasnye Vorota is the location of the Krasnye Vorota Metro Station on the ground level.
