ZEMLIANOI VAL STREET

Street in the Central Okrug District of Moscow

Located in the Basmanny and Tagansky Districts in Moscow, Zemlianoi Val Street runs from Zemlianoi Square to Taganskaya Square. The street received its name from a line of fortifications built in 1592-1953, by Boris Godunov. In 1938, the street name changed to Chkalova Street and Chkalovskaya Street, after a soviet pilot named Valery Pavlovich Chkalov but was eventually changed back. Due to the street’s location in the Garden Ring, it was going to be entirely reconstructed in 1935, only north of the Yauza did the construction of new homes, and modern Zemlianoi Val remains a mixture of buildings from different eras.
