SMOLENSK SQUARE

Square in the Arbat District of Moscow

Smolensk Square is positioned between Smolenskaya-Sennaya Square, Arbat, Smolenskaya Street, and Novinsky Boulevard. The market on Smolensk-Square developed after the plague epidemic of 1771. The square started filling up with houses, which were all rebuilt after the fire of 1736. The square was reconstructed in the 1920s, and the market and pre-revolutionary buildings were destroyed. In 1952, the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade was erected on the border of the square. Currently, Smolenskaya Square is a wide highway with buildings on both sides of it, with upcoming renovations planned.
