SKATERNYI LANE

Lane in Central Administrative Okrug of Moscow

Skaternyi Lane starts at Merzlyakovsky Lane and extends to Povarskaya Street. The name is derived from the original cooks and bakers who settled in Moscow during the seventeenth century and lived along the lane. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the alleys adjacent to Bolshaya Nikitskaya Street were constructed into private houses around 4-7 stories high. In Skatertnyi Lane, more than 20 buildings from that time have been preserved. In 1997, the lane was included in the protected area “Povarskaya – Bolshaya Nikitskaya”. In addition, in 1997 most of the street was included in the United Protected Area of historical and cultural monuments.
